Map of the Month - December 2023

December 2023’s Map of the Month is a comparison of species records in Hull before and after City Nature Challenge bioblitz event!

Species records are plotted as points in blue. ‘Glowing’ radii have been used to illustrate high densities of records.

NEYEDC helped to facilitate the global wildlife recording event City Nature Challenge in Hull earlier this year (2023). This recording event is based on the use of iNaturalist, a fantastic resource for easy data collection from a mobile device. The 4-day long recording event hugely increased both the number and spread of biological records in Hull, an important feat in built up areas where development and planning pressures are acute. In addition, due to the inbuilt GPS in mobile devices, high resolution location information is present for all new records, captured on iNaturalist. The maps above compare species records available before and after the recording event (with at least 8-figure grid reference resolution). The event also hopes that by encouraging and training organisations and members of the public in the use of iNaturalist, that recording efforts in the city and beyond will continue outside of the event itself.

Along with partner organisations, we will be running Hull CNC again in 2024, and we’d love for you to get involved. If you’d like to help out email us at info@neyedc.co.uk, or simply get recording in Hull across the weekend of 26th - 29th April.
