Map of the Month - March 2025
March’s Map of the Month shows a Ure Crayfish Plague Progression Map for 2020 - 2024!
This map, produced by the Environment Agency, shows the wider progress of Crayfish plague from 2020 - 2024. This disease is a water mould (Aphanomyces astaci) which is spreading as part of an ongoing outbreak, and threatens our only native species, the White-clawed Crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipies). The green dots on the map show the most recent survey locations where native White-clawed Crayfish have been confirmed. More information can be found in the Environment Agency’s Ure Crayfish Plague Outbreak 2024 document. Agencies are encouraging the Check, Clean, Dry procedure for users of watercourses to help prevent the spread of invasive species and reduce the spread of plague.
NEYEDC share data with the Environment Agency as part of ongoing work to monitor the species, and also receive monitoring data to incorporate into our reporting database. We also attend annual Yorkshire Crayfish Forum meetings to stay up-to-date with developments in our region.
